Dear Friend of Jazz,
To commemorate the eighth year of the Women of Jazz Series, I have culminated my first body of totally original works, “Unlettered”. Please join myself and the host committee in supporting the legacy, history and heritage of women in jazz on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 5:00 pm at the Woodruff Arts Center Rich Auditorium where I will perform a Tribute to Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln and Billie Holiday and feature original compositions from my newly released album.
It was my honor to: 1) present performance poetry alongside Nikki Giovanni and Sonja Sanchez at the Woman-to-Woman Series sponsored by Saturn Motor Cars; and 2) be featured on Russell Gunn’s Grammy nominated album, “Ethnomusicology 2”. I have further been inspired by how I was received by audiences during performances at: 1) Southern Illinois University's “Black Women in American History and Culture; 2) the National Black Arts Festival's “Interpretations: Black Visual Art Past, Present and Future; and 3) the Atlanta Jazz Festival’s “Tribute to Nina Simone.”
My journey as an artist has been amazing. I have performed the compositions of jazz masters for over 25 years. I was proud to have the historic Odd Fellows Atrium and Rooftop located at 236 Auburn Avenue as my last performance site and anticipate a stellar performance at the Rich Auditorium of The Woodruff Arts Center.
I thank you in advance for whatever support you are able to render as a patron, attendee or sponsor. I deeply appreciate your consideration and remain inspired by the tradition of jazz and the women who have paved the way.
Jodi Merriday, M.A., M.Sc., Ph.D.
